How it works

Importing the GPX into Komoot

Importing works from the Komoot website and from the mobile app alike: find the file-import option and drop in the GPX you downloaded here. Komoot turns it into a planned Tour, available anywhere you're signed in to the same account. It's that Tour, not the file, that you follow out on the road.

Once the Tour exists, everything else behaves like a Tour you planned in Komoot: you can download it for offline use, start voice navigation, or sync it to a compatible bike computer or watch through the integrations Komoot offers on its side.

What carries over, and what does not

The GPX SmartGPX produces holds the full line of the calculated route, plus a waypoint for each stop you entered in Google Maps. What Komoot can't infer from a file is its own metadata: difficulty, surface type, the sport a Tour belongs to and nearby highlights are recalculated or estimated by Komoot from its own map, not read out of the file. Don't be surprised if an imported Tour shows less detail than one planned start-to-finish inside Komoot.

Common issues

A route planned for a car in Google Maps stays a road route after importing: Komoot won't turn it into a cycling or hiking line. If you're after gravel or trails, plan that one in Komoot directly and keep this conversion for road-based rides.

Very dense tracks can be slow to process on import. If it stalls, simplify the track and try again, or check the file first in the GPX viewer.

Yes, through Komoot own offline download for the Tour. That part is handled entirely by Komoot, not by the file.

Why does my imported Tour have less detail?

Difficulty, surface type and Highlights are computed by Komoot from its own map data. A GPX carries the line and its stops, not Komoot metadata.

Does SmartGPX upload to Komoot for me?

No. SmartGPX gives you a GPX file that you import yourself. There is no official integration or partnership with Komoot.
